Instead of putting a "User" or "Assistant" header above every block use a small prefix.

User messages get a blue > with a lighter background

Assistant messages get a green dot

Tool use gets a green $ (or red if failed).

Make the selected box have a blue background, if in normal mode, don't grey out the input text, just the outline of the box.
